Malta India Film Festival Officially Open!

The first edition of the Malta India Film Festival opens to a stellar evening at the iconic Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), Valletta, attended by dignitaries of the Government, filmmakers from across the world and leading Indian film director, writer and Festival juror, Mr Vijay Krishna Acharya along with a special screening of his latest Indian blockbuster – ‘Thugs of Hindostan

The festival, a first of its kind, received a huge response of over 40 films with either a Maltese or Indian element spanning feature films, documentaries and short films. Over 24 films from these will be screened over the weekend of December 14, 15, 16 at St James Cavalier in Valletta. Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Malta, the endeavour and the vision of this Festival is to build a creative bridge between Malta and India, encouraging art, culture and entertainment between both countries.

Mr Engelbert Grech, Juror and Director of Malta India Film Festival shared his thoughts, “There is a packed programme of events with a total of 26 films. From Malta, we have a good line-up of 6 local films, which show that in Malta the art of film making is continuously developing. This is just the beginning of a new adventure. The main aim of the festival is to bring together two different cultures, and offer the opportunity to film makers from both Malta and India to collaborate even further.”

Honourable Minister of Tourism, Malta, Mr Konrad Mizzi added, “We are so excited that we can finally see the Malta India Film Festival come to reality following Malta’s partnership with so many iconic films, including ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which is being screened today and has paved the path for Indian blockbuster cinema in Malta. Mr Vijay Krishna Acharya, India’s topmost film director was heard saying ‘I can live in Malta!’ Malta holds a very special place in his heart which was evident as he shared, “Malta is a great filming location with beautiful scenery and robust capabilities. However, like I always believe, it’s the people that make a place memorable and I have genuinely had the most fantastic experience working with the Maltese people. I am so thrilled to be back on this lovely island, this time as a juror of this solid initiative of the Festival which has an excellent line-up of some really good films. And to have ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ filmed at this very Island, in a way, feels like homecoming.”

The Malta India Film Festival, an initiative of the Malta India Film Academy, is the first of its kind platform for film-makers across the world to showcase and share their work. The winners will be granted a total prize of Euros 200,000. The shortlisted films are being screened for public viewing on 14, 15, 16 December 2018 in Valletta, Malta and simultaneously in Mumbai, India on December 15 and 16, 2018.

Streamcast Partners With Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)

Launches Edmission – a revolutionary digital education platform that delivers low bandwidth e-learning to the masses

Streamcast Group, an international technology company today announced its partnership with BSNL Maharashtra  – India’s state-owned telecommunications company.

Using Streamcast’s proprietary technology, the partnership enables delivery at ultra low bandwidth of a spectrum of high end triple-play digital services via the BSNL network (wired & wireless) to every part of Maharashtra thus, providing digital inclusion for everyone.

In line with Streamcast’s business philosophy of enriching human lives, the first service being launched in this partnership is EDMISSION – Education with a Mission. The philosophy and vision of Edmission is to deliver education and learning for all age-groups to all sections of the society, especially the rural areas. Leveraging Streamcast’s high compute planned data centre investment of over INR 5,500 crore at the recently announced data centre in Banda, Sawantwadi, Edmission will deliver varied learning content in multiple vernacular languages as well as English.

While Edmission will be made available to anyone using a BSNL SIM Card, Streamcast has further mooted the partnership by committing to distribute 500,000 free set top boxes (STBs) across Maharashtra in the launch phase. Powered by the BSNL SIM in it, users/students will be able to access Edmission content at their homes using rich graphics and video as well as interact with educators with no other connectivity requirement other than the SIM card. The first 100,000 STBs will be distributed in the district of Sindhudurg and the process of selecting the homes for the STB will be designed and managed by the Maharashtra Government led by Hon. Minister Kesarkar, the Guardian Minister of Sindhudurg district and his office. As the ambit of the partnership expands to other geographies, the process will be replicated across other districts.

To announce this unique partnership, Hon. Shri Udhav Thackeray graced the event as Chief Guest, along with Shri. Subhashji Desai, Minister of Industries, Hon. Shri.  Vinodji Tawde, Minister of Education, Hon. Shri Deepakji Sawant, Minister of Health, Hon. Shri Deepakji Kesarkar, Minister of State for Home (Rural), Planning and Finance and Guardian Minister of Sindhudurg, Hon. Shri Bhushanji Gagrani, Principle Secretary to Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra along with representation from senior members of BSNL and Streamcast including Shri. Peeyush Khare, CGM-BSNL, Maharashtra, Mr Nimish Pandya, Chairperson of Streamcast Group and Mrs Ashima B Chhalill, Head of Education, Streamcast Group.

The event also saw Hon. Shri Uddhavji Thackeray, Chief Guest unveil the name of the Sawantwadi Human Resource Development (HRD) Centre in Sawantwadi as ‘Bal Saheb Thackeray Gyaan Prabodhini’. The Centre marks the region’s first physical infrastructure supported and managed by Streamcast which will serve as a training centre for students to appear for various civil/ skilled exams thus, combining online content with offline facilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon. Minister Mr. Deepak Kesarkar, Minister of State for Home (rural) Planning, Finance and Guardian minister of Sindhudurg said, “India is a young nation with over 50% of the population being less than 25 years of age. It is important to provide this young populace with quality education and infrastructural facilities which will nurture their vocational skills as well as enhance their employability. With the first STBs being distributed in Sindhudurg, education and entertainment will be available to people in the comfort of their homes. Further, the HRD centre will offer a solid landmark centre for interested students to prepare and train for entrance exams of civil services, banking and insurance. In line with this, I would like to thank Streamcast for taking this initiative as well as investing heavily in technology to open doors for the youth of Sindhudurg.”

The First Ever Malta India Film Festival Launches in Malta

The Malta India Film Academy will launch the first edition of the Malta India Film Festival to be held in Malta from December 14-16, 2018. The festival, a first of its kind, will be open to film-makers from across the world who have either Maltese or Indian element in their film. Supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Malta, the endeavour is to build a creative bridge encouraging art, culture and entertainment between the two countries.

The Festival will invite entries across different genres of cinema and will be in categories of Feature Film, Short Film & Documentaries. The shortlisted set of films, as graded by the panel of jury, will then be screened over three days in Valletta, the capital city of Malta.

At the Press Conference held on August 9, 2018, Brand Ambassador and Jury Member, Ms Vidya Balan said, “It is always a pleasure and honour to be part of a cinematic platform that encourages film-makers. The Malta India Film Festival brings forth not only a unique opportunity for talent to come together but also the beautiful and magical country of Malta.
